The "Boston Slave Riot" was an unsuccesful attempt by African American abolitionists, led by Lewis Hayden, to rescue captured fugitive slave Anthony Burns from the courthouse. During the riot that followed, a deputy marshal, James Batchelder (here "Bachelder"), was killed.
