Be among the first to explore this exhibition, which charts major Massachusetts events in the first year of the American Revolution. The stories behind Paul Revere’s ride, the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and more are illustrated through rare letters, diary accounts, and artifacts from the MHS collection. Plus, enjoy hors d’oeuvres, libations, and Revolution-themed performances.

Arthur Asahel Shurcliff (1870–1957), a landscape architect, created a collection of 1,295 glass lantern slides that depict cityscapes and buildings in Boston during the first decades of the 20th century, and much more. In addition to the views of Boston reproduced here, there are slides of historical maps and paintings, plans and drawings created by Shurcliff to illustrate urban growth and land use, and early aerial photographs of Boston and other cities. Both the content and arrangement of the collection suggest that Shurcliff used the lantern slides to illustrate presentations to state and city planning boards, as well as lectures before educational and civic organizations. 

In 1773, Boston was on the verge of revolution and people had conflicting viewpoints. The Dye is cast explores the perspectives of six individuals by looking at their social, business, spiritual, and family networks. MHS Members are invited to join us at a special reception featuring libations, hors d’oeuvres, and pop-up performances to open the exhibition!

The Fenway Studios is the only purpose-built structure in the United States designed to provide work and living space for artists that is still used for its original intent. It was modeled after 19th-century Parisian atelier studios but took the additional step of encouraging studio-design suggestions from the founding artists. This temporary exhibition will celebrate the history and evolution of Fenway Studios by shining a light on contemporary work produced by current members alongside rarely shown paintings from the MHS collection created by past Fenway Studios artists.
