JA—Mass. General Court: Speeches and Writings
- MHS MS Stack: New York ("Given by the heirs of Jonathan Trumbull, ... 1795")
- Note: This is the form in which JA's report to Mass. General Court in 1774 (see D/JA, 2:87, 105–106; 3:302–304) was resurrected and used by a committee (Bowdoin, S. Adams, John Lowell) in 1783. See Goebel's commentary, p. 564–565, and text at p. 648, which points directly to JA as author. The handwriting, spelling, and punctuation are not JA's. This is, in fact, a crude copy of the lost original—there are strong indications of JA's style; note paragraphs beginning "To all this assemblage of Belgic erudition" (p. 644–645).
