The xxiiijth of July my wife Anne with my soonne John and his wife Mary did ride to the Baptising of John Hilles the sonne of William Hilles of Holton.1

The next day my soonne and his wife did ride to her fathers in Essex.

The 29 of July the Sessions were kept at Groton by Sir William Waldegraue Sir Thomas Eden Mr. Brampton Gurdon Mr. William Clopton, Sir George Waldegraue Mr. Cratchreede Cracherode Mr. Walton.

The xxxth of July Mr. William Clopton kept a Court at Castleines Hall.

The first of August my soonne Thomas Fones came to Groton from London. the same daye my Cosyn Humphrey Munnings2 preached at Boxford a very godly and learned sermon vppon the v chap. of Genesis v. 1.2.3.

The ijd day of August I did reape my wheat in Peryfield and the shearers caught a hare.

The Third day I deliuered an estat to my soonne in lawe Thomas Foones and Anne his wyfe in Quickes Tenement in Edwardston.

The iiijth of Aug. Johane Cooke was deliuered of a girl Abigail an Hermaphrodite.

The viijth of August Edward Alstons eldest sonne John was borne in Boxforde and Mistres Wheeler died.

The ixth of August I sealed thassurance to John Plombe of his mansion house in Boxford.

The xiiijth I bought ix lambes of John Nutton.

The xvth my brother John Foorth and his daughter came to Groton.

The xxixth Mr. Rogers preached at Boxford Jam. 4. 1.2.3.4. the same day my sonne did ride to Stambridge.

The last of August the pond was cast.

The third of sept. Mr. William Manock and his eldest sonne dyned at my house.

The vth I was sworne at Stowe before Sir William Waldegrave and other Commissioners for to inquire of Recusantes3 landes and goodes.

The vijth the great ponde in Howe meadowe was cast and clensed of all the mudde and I did put in to it vj yonge Carpes and a dozen tenches.

The 28 of septembre Mistris Martha Pyend removed out of Groton into Edwardston with all her famillye.

29 Sept. 1605 Robert Bogis paid me xl li. to redeeme his lande.

the next day I did ride to Stambrige. and retourned from thence the iiijth of september October.

The vjth of Octobre William Bettes departed from me.

The viijth the goodwyfe lappage was buried.

The ixth I was at Brettenham at my cosen Humphrey munnynges.

The xviijth of octobre I changed a barrowe hogge for a sowe with John Rawlyng and she furrowed xij pigges the next night.

The xixth of octobre Henry Pease came to dwell with me and the xxth I did ride to Cannouden4 in Essex with the wydow Alston and returned the 26th.

The xxixth of octobre Justine Nicholson was maryed to Josua Stocken at Edwardston.

Memorandum that the xxjth of Octobre John Tille and Robert his sonne entered into Swetsers howse at Stonstrete and kept the possession therof vntill the last of octobre and then he yelded vp the possession to Sweetser.

The same day my Cosen Humphrey Munnyng preched at Boxford.

The vjth of Novembre my brother Roger Alibaster came to me and bownde Thomas his sonne for a yere from the i of the same monethe with Cook the Sherman of Boxford iiij li. per Annum.

The xvth of No. I did ryde towardes London and the 28 I retourned home.

The 23 of No. Edward Spencer 5 was caryed to Bury Gaile.

The iijd of December I did ryde to the Auditt at Trinity College and retourned the xvijth.

The xth of December Elizabeth Piend was maried.

The iiijth of Jan: mr. Tomkes6 a fellowe of Trinitie College was at my house.

The xviijth of January my Cosen Walter Mildmay and iiij other gentlemen made a great sturre at Bury.

The 26 of Jan. Joseph Coles wife was deliuered of a soonne.

The 28 of Jan. I was at the deliuery of an estate by Branston to John Brag in a marshe.

The xxx and xxxj of Jan. viij traitors were hanged and Quartered wherof Ambrose Rookewood7 of Coldham hall in Suffolk was one.

The viijth of Feb. William Ponde deliuered an estate to Edward Alston of Boxford in his house in Polstede.

On Wedensday in the morning the 12 of Feb. my soonnes first soonne was borne in Groton. 34

Son of Humphrey Munning of Semer, co. Suffolk, and Ellen (Ungle) Munning, M.A. from Magdalene, 1585, ordained deacon and priest 1589, rector of Great Thornham, co. Robert Winter, brother of Thomas, Edward Grant, Bates, and another had suffered the penalty on the 30th. Coldham Hall in Stanningfield, co. Suffolk, had been in the Rookewood family since 1357. D. N.
