This indenture 1 made etc. Betweene Thomas Arkesden2 sonne and heir of blank Arkesden late of blankand (blank) his wife and since 1 deceased of the one parte and Henry Sandis of Groton in the said County Clerk father in lawe of the said Thomas of the other parte wittnesseth that whereas the said Henry Sandis at the speciall instance and request of the said Thomas and the most of his neerest friends was intrusted with the Authoritie and gardianshipp of the said Thomas and Francis his sister and of suche landes and goodes 1 as fell to them or either of them from their said father and mother which Charge the said Henry having taken vpon him and faithfully performed, and thereof yeilded vp a true and perfecte Accompte vnto the said Thomas having now attained his full age of xiiij yeares, which accompt was examined and allowed by the privitye and consent of blank Plombe and blank his wife the grandfather and grandmother of the said Thomas and of blank the vncles of the said Thomas as by the note thereof vnder the handes of all the said partyes bearing the date 142of these presentes dothe more fully appeare. Now the said Thomas vpon confidence of the great Love and tender care which the said Henry Sandis hathe allwayes borne towardes him, and by the consent and allowance of all his freindes aforesaid hathe and dothe by these presentes constitute chose and appointe him the said Henry Sandis his Gardian Tutor and baylyfe authorising him by vertue hereof to receive all his rents, to provide his necessaryes and to order his education as to him the said Henry shall seeme best and most behovefull for the good of him the said Thomas who dothe willingly submitt himselfe to his Authoritie and government as in former tymes. And the said Thomas by the Consent of his said friendes dothe promise and agree to and with the said Henry Sandis that forsomuch as the said Frauncis his sister is yet very yonge, and vnprovided of any meanes of maintenance, it shalbe lawfull for the said Henry to receive and kepe out of the overplus of the revenues of the said Thomas so muche as may well be spared from his maintenance, and the reparations of his houses etc. and the same to imploye towardes the education of his said sister and the providing some portion for hir promising hereby to allowe the same vnto the said Henry Sandis vpon his Accompt whensoeuer the same shalbe made. In wittnesse whereof etc.

This Accompt was allowed by the said Thomas A: and by blank Plombe and blank his wife the grandfather and grandmother of the said Thomas and of blank the vncles and neerest freindes of the said Thomas and in wittnesse thereof they all subsined their handes

I made these writings dated Aprill 23. 1623 at the request of Mr. Sandis and of the said Thomas who came to me diverse tymes for them.

Nouerint vniuersis per presentes nos Johannem Sugg de Groton in Comitatu Suffolcie Butcher et Richardum Sugg de Cersye in eodem Comitatu husbandman teneri et firmiter obligari Josepho Cole Philipo Gostlin et Johanni Rawlin Overseers of the poore of the said parishe of Groton in viginti libris legalis monete Anglie solvendis eisdem Josepho Philipo et Johanni aut eorum aliquo Vel successoribus suis in the said office of Overseers of the poore of the said parishe of Groton Ad quam quidem solutionem bene et fideliter faciendam Obligamus nos et vtrumque nostrorum per se pro toto et in solido heredes Executores et administratores nostros firmiter per presentes. Sigillis nostris sigillatas. Datas decimo septimo die Januarii Anno Regni Regis domini nostri Jacobi Anglie etc. decimo septimo et Scotie 53—1619–20.

The Condicion of this Obligacion is such that, whereas the above bounden John Sugg was found and adiudged to be the reputed father of one John a Bastard Child borne of the bodye of Marye Colman of the said parishe of Groton Widow which base Childe is likely to be Chargeable to the said parishe and therevpon was ordered to paye three shillings fouer pence monthly towardes the keepinge of the said base Childe as by an Order vnder the handes and seales of John Gurdon and John Winthrop Esquires Justices of peace and dated at Assington in the said County the xiiijth daye of Januarye 143in the yeare aforesaid doth more fully appeere: If therefore the said John Sugg and Richard Sugge or either of them theire heires Executors and Administrators or any of them shall well and truely paye vnto the Overseers of the poore of Groton aforesaid for the tyme beinge or to any of them the said summe of three shillings fowerpence etc. 75

Thomas Arkisden was educated at Cambridge, 1626–33, invented a short-hand alphabet (M. H. S., 4 Collections , VI. 481), and is mentioned infra, pp. 346, 349, 402. He married in 1636. Venn, A. C. , 1. 39, gives Arkasden or Archensdon. A Thomas Arkisden married Francis Durrant at Brettenham, February 10, 1606–07.
