Adam Winthrop had been “called to the outer bar” of the Inner Temple, i.e., made a barrister at law, on February 9, 1583–84. The ’pension’ or annual assessment was two shillings each year from 1584 to 1595 inclusive, except 1586 and 1594, when it was four shillings. The only ’aid roll,’ or extraordinary assessment, levied during this time was that of May 6, 1593, which for outer barristers was 13 s. 4 d. It would seem that Winthrop was squaring his accounts at the Inner Temple in preparation for the closing of his membership in that house, which is entered under the meeting of June 22, 1595. Calendar of the Inner Temple Records, ed. F. A. Inderwick, I. 329–406, passim, especially 329, 388, 406.
