Notes for my remembrance touchinge the lande which I bought of Joseph Gale in Assington.

Martii Eliz. Regine 1. Imprimis Robert Gale his father beinge seised therof in fee made a lease therof by his deede Indented vnto John Mendham1 for one Thowsand yeres etc.

2. Item the said Robert died seised of the Revercion and the same descended to 104Joseph his sonne who was founde heire by office2 and within age and in warde for that the said lande was holden of the Queene by knightes service in capite.

3. Item the said lease made to Mendham was also founde in the office aforesaid inter alia.

4. Item the said Mendham died possessed of the said lease after whose deathe the Widowe Gale3 redeemed the same of Mendhams widowe being his executrix and entered into the lande and tooke the profittes therof during her life by force of the said lease.

5. Item the said Joseph after his mothers deathe entered and tooke the profittes therof and being within age maried without licence.

6. Item the said Josephe when he came to his full age desired me to make a lease of the said lande in myne owne name which I made vnto John Parson for xij yeres by deede Indented reserving to me and my heires iij li. per Annum. the which lease the saide Josephe confirmed vnto the said Parson by his deede in wrightinge vnder his hande and seale. teste me ipso.

7. Item the said Josephe after that did release vnto me and my heires all thestat right title and interest which he had in the same lande.

8. Item he procured Mr. Clarke who had maried Mendhams widowe to deliuer vnto me the lease that Robert Gale had made to Mr. Mendham of the said lande.

9. Item after all this to make my estate sure in the said lande I procured Joseph Gale and his wife to levie a fyne of the saide lande inter alia vnto my brother and me and to the heires of my brother.

1609. One sundaie the 21th of January my daughter Anne Fones was deliuered of her seconde daughter.4

One thursdaye the 25th Mr. Dr. Jones preached at Boxford on the 3 Chap. of Ecclesiastes v. 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.

The 26 Ruthe Sinderlande Sunderland was drowned and I inquired vppon hir death as Coroner.

The 27 I surrendered my Auditorship in Trinitye College to the Master fellowes and schollers before a public notary.

The xiijth of Feb. I was godfather to Jasper Riddlesdales daughter.5

The 14 John Nutton brought a lode of brome to Colbrondes through my barne closse without my leaue.

One Tuesday at night the xth of January the goodwife Goslin was taken lame on the lefte syde with a dedde palsey.

The last of Feb. my sister Elizabeth Winthrop was at Groton.

On Wedensday the thirde of Marche Sir John Spenser6 of London died suddenly as he was pullinge on his netherstockes in the mornynge and was buryed the blank of Marche.

The xjth of Marche Mr. John Knewstub preached at Boxford.

The xiiijth thassises were holden at Chelmesford by Baron Altham7 only and Sir Thomas Mildmay of Barnes in Springfild was highe shrive.

1610 On Munday the xvjth of Aprill Mr. Rich. Brooke the nue Auditor of Trinity College was at my house in Groton to whom I deliuered diuers papers bookes and Roles touchinge his office.

On Fryday the xviij of May my wife did ride to London with Mris. Pyne. Mr. John Bronde died suddenly.

On Munday in the morninge Richarde Plum died of thage of iiij score and vij yeres.

The same daye Thomas Page his wife was deliuered of ij Children.

The same day the pumpe in the well had a nue buckett.

On fryday the viijth of June Mr. Thomas Lovell8 the preacher died vir bonus ac pius, nulli pietate secundus. aetatis 64.

The xiijth of June my Cosen Humphrey Munnynge and Mr. Marcellyne were at my house at which tyme I did give my cosen a scotch dagger and Mr. Marcellyne a nue knyfe.

The xiiijth of June Mr. Rogers preached at Boxford.

The first of July Henry Cooke my Tenant died of a Pluresye.

The xth of July I sealed an obligacion of xl li. for the payement of xxij li. the xijth of July 1611 to Nicholas Cokye in his house.

The same day my soonne John Winthrop came to Groton.

The last of August my sister Elizabeth Winthrop delivered a warrant vnto me from my Lord Treasorour etc. 41

Winthrop, Adam (1548-1623)

Memorialls of my Cosen Josua Winthrop his wifes Anne behaviour since she came to dwell in Groton viz. the 24 of Septembre Anno 1603.

The same day beinge Saturday at night she came to Mr. Powles howse and lodged there.

On sonday I hearde that she was come but she came not to my howse nor sent to me.

On sunday the 2 of October I spake with her and diuers tymes since very familiarly.

On sonday the ixth of octobre she came to my howse and for that my wife towlde her of her expenses in apparell etc. she departed in displeasure.

The xvjth day beinge sunday she came to Groton Church in the forenoone but not in the afternoone and the next day Mr. Powle departed from Groton to dwell in Greate Waldingfield.

The xxiijth day beinge sonday in the night she was robbed and lost iij li. in goulde and most of her wearinge lynnen and the next day she and her soonne came to soiourne with me.

On sonday the xxxth of octobre she went not to Church neither in the forenoone or afternoone for the which bycause my wife did frendly reproue her she fell out with her in bitter woordes and the next day she went to John Nuttons1 house and there made her abode.

On Munday the vijth of November she sent for her thinges to my house and went againe to her owne house.

On Sunday the 13th of November she dined with Mr. Eldred at the widowe Kedbyes and ther she complayned to him of my Wife etc.

On Munday the 25 28 of November she did ride to my cosen Humphrey Munnynges and came home the blank of Decembre.

On Wedensday the 4 of Jan: she was cited to appere at Bury that day fortnight.

The xth of Jan: she sownded swooned and was sicke for greefe.

The xvijth of Jan: she went to London in Colchester wagon.
