Boston March 31st 1773 Brother Paine,

Inclosed is a Writ against that humane and sinsible Lawgiver Jerathl. Bowers1 Esqr. of Swansey which I must beg of you to deliver to Mr. Job Williams or some other officer, who will not fail to serve & return it in season, for such is my veneration and esteem for our modern Lycurgus, that I shall be unhappy if this Writ should miss of a service.

Be kind eno' to look it over & correct any mistakes before it is served,510as I shall enter it before he can settle it, and make him pay the Entry &c. if not an extra fee for the double Court &c. Your affectionate

Jerathamel Bowers of Swansea, Mass., was appointed a justice of the peace for Bristol County in 1760 (Whitmore, Mass. Civil List, 144). He served on the town's committee of correspondence during the Revolution.

After my Hearty Thanks to You for the Care you took to fill up a Writ & Send me together with a letter1 Which I Recd. in Good Season: I think it My Duty to let You know how the Matter Has Ended: the Writ was Serv'd & I Engaged Lawyer Winslow of Plymouth to Assist me & upon his Advice together with Yours in Your letter I Left Both the Actions Subsisting between sd. Gray & Freeman to a Refferanc: to Daniel Davis Esq: David Thacher Esq: & John Grenough Esq: & it was Try'd & the Award Brought into Court at April Court & they found for Gray to Pay me three Pounds & for Each to Bear his Own Costs at Law & to Pay the Charge of the Arbitration Equally Between them: & so there is a final Issue of the Whole Affairs.

I Expect to Pay you for Your Trouble when I have an Oppertunity. Give My Service to your Wife & tell her I Should be Glad to See Her at Barnstable. I hope You & Yours are Well & I wish you Prosperity & Happyness. My Mother & Wife & Sister Send their Regards to You & Yours. Mother Prays you to Enquire if Aunt Hunt2 is Liveing & let Her Know it. We are all in Usual Health & So is Brother Hinckleys Family. Their Daughter Elisabeth was Married Last December to John Hinckley jur. Son of Deacon Hinckley & She Lives a Quarter of a Mile East of her Fathers Just at the foot of Governours Hill. Haveing No more to add I Conclude with my Respects to You. Experience (Paine) Hunt died June 17, 1775, aged 72 years. She was the youngest surviving sister of Thomas Paine and Mary (Paine) (Freeman) Hawes (Paine, Paine Ancestry, 13).
