Robert Treat Paine Papers, Volume 1
Sir, Yours I Rec'd and am sorry to Inform you I look upon my self so weak as to be incapable to perform the Journey Proposed however when you goe if I am capable shall with Pleasure bear you Company, Uncle Chauncey and Mr. Bonner1 is soon intended a Journey that way it would not be improper to goe at that time. I have endeavour'd to procure you164a horse and had gott one wou'd suited you, but unfortunately lost him again since which have not been able to procure Any Other.
I have since I left Bath taken a Very sharp relapse that my spirits are now at a very low ebb. Tired Nature Faints beneath the Pond'rous weight. I hope you'll Call when you goe to Shephards and if Can either goe my self or mend your steed shall be proud to have it in my power. I am your Hle. Servt.,

The last I wrote you was dated April 15th. which Letters I imagine are but lately come to yr. hands, it being some time after the Letters were wrote before the Vessell got to Sea, & as I then wrote you I have Engaged My Load but am prodiguously put to it to raise Money to pay for it, which has Engross'd my time so as that I have done Nothing towards getting My Load down the River, which might have been doing mean time could I have got any Body to have undertaken it, but it is a busy time of the Year & People not at all Spirited to do Business. But Still I would have the Vessell sent if she be not already, for as I have recd. a great deal of Tar, it must suffer much if it be not Shipped. I must depend upon more Effects being sent me, for I shall not be able to get the Money that is in Abra. Sheppards hands, & purpose to sue him before I come out of the Country. The Not having the Whole of the Effects with me is a great hindrance to me in getting my Load. But there is scarce Any thing so difficult but it may be waded thro'. I hope Tar will fetch a good Price in Boston altho' the Small Pox must have stagnated Business. Pray Gentlemen send a good Vessell. I conclude yr. humble Servt.,
