14. VII:30. I reported to the President this Morning the substance of my yesterday’s Conversation with Dr Thornton, and particularly his request to see the President, to explain verbally his conduct to him in person. The President said he would not see him, nor have any conversation with him upon any thing, unless it 310were Patents, and very little upon them— Mr B. Irvine came to the Office and took his Papers, for the agency to Venezuela. Mr Pleasonton came, and I gave him directions for the settlement of A. H. Everett’s account, and that of John Smith late Marshal of New-York. I had also some conversation with him upon my own accounts, and the principle upon which the Comptroller has objected against some of my charges, in which objections I told him I should not acquiesce— I dined at Mr Crowninshield’s in a company without Ladies. Messrs. Crawford and Calhoun. Commodore’s Rogers, Decatur and Porter. Captain Evans, Mr Silsbee & G. Blake were there— I came home at 8 O’Clock— Mrs. Adams and Susan Buchanan spent the Evening at Mr Hyde de Neuville’s.
