Fine day. I went to Market and from thence to Quincy where I had agreed to meet several workmen on matters connected with my house. Found it looking far more pleasant and cheerful than I had anticipated. The winter has on the whole left the work pretty fairly. I went over the house and opened it to receive the air. Made arrangements with the painter and grate maker. Decided upon a furnace. And then home. The South side of the house looked exceedingly warm and agreeable at this time in the year when I had expected it would be bleak. But the day was fine and the wind westerly, which makes a great difference. Home but rather late so that I had little time to do any thing. Afternoon, coins. Evening at home. H. G. Gorham here for an hour.

A very fine day. The one fixed upon according to custom for the observation of a general fast but which has of late years been observed as a kind of quiet holiday. As such I like it. It is unique in it’s character. None of the noise and bustle, the guns, drums, blunderbuss and thunder of our Jubilee days, and none of the stuffing of thanksgiving. If there is excess and I fear there is, it is at least not the prominent external feature.1

I spent an hour upon coins and then attended divine Service and heard Dr. Frothingham from Psalms 25. 11. “For thy name’s sake O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.” I am afraid I can give no account of this discourse of which I am a little ashamed. After service walk with my children, the day was lovely and the common was crowded with boys playing ball. Spent some time before dinner upon the collection of coins.

T. K. Davis dined and spent the afternoon during which we walked twice round the common. Pleasant enough. He left at eight after which we had a short evening. Being fatigued, I retired early.

Friday 6th.

A very lovely day, such as we have here and there in the course of our Spring to relish more from its contrast with the others. I went to the Office first to meet an applicant for the farm from Weston. After 19talking with him I then went to Quincy where I found Sayer hard at work upon the bookshelves. This seems like setting the heavy machinery in motion. After measuring for the rest of the furniture which detained me until later than I intended, I returned to town not getting there until after two. Of course nothing material could be done. Home. Afternoon coins. Evening, Dr. and Mrs. Frothingham spent with us pleasantly. No news.
