arrears of Diary and of Accounts which my way of passing time while my father is here has a tendency to accumulate.

On my return found my father who had been met and complimented by the Committee of his friends who had had his picture painted by Mr. Page.1 The feeling in the City is much more favourable to him than it has been for many years.

Afternoon, I began the life of Aaron Burr by Matthew L. Davis. Evening, called to see Dr. Frothingham who has been confined to his house unwell. Conversation with him upon various subjects metaphysical and moral quite edifying. He spoke of my papers with commendation.

The Boston Courier (17 Nov., p. 2, col. 2) carried an account of the ceremony of presentation and listed those who had contributed. The painting is reproduced and the attending circumstances recounted in Oliver, Portraits of JQA and His Wife , p. 197–200.

Saturday 17th.

Day fine. Office with Accounts and visitors. Dine at I. P. Davis’. Evening at home.

I was taken up almost all of my time by W. Spear who came with his long Account to settle and with Mr. B. V. French of Braintree who was here about a piece of fence he wants made on the Mount Wollaston farm. There was some vexation in both. These improvements at Quincy are not without their heavy charge. Mr. French’s business is an expense purely to gratify his own vanity and pique against the Tenant.

Home. Then with my father to dine with I. P. Davis. Judge Davis with T. K. Davis and Mr. Bancroft came in after dinner. Pleasant talk and a comfortable dinner. Judge Davis is a man of extensive information and strong natural sense.

Sunday. 18th.

Cool day. Attended divine service as usual. Evening at home.

Read part of Milman’s History of the Jews of which I have now the second volume. Attended at the Church in Chauncy Place and heard Dr. Gray preach both parts of the day. Morning from Colossians 3. 1. “Seek those things which are above where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” Afternoon from Matthew 7. 1 and 2. “Judge not that ye be not judged. For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again.” Dr. Gray is not very interesting and even if he was my mind is in such a state as to prevent my giving him much deliberate attention.

Read a Sermon in the English Preacher, by Tillotson. Titus 3. 2. “Speak evil of no man.” The best discourse of his which I have read. Thus passed the day rapidly enough. The evening spent at home. Nothing of interest.
