Diary of Charles Francis Adams, volume 4
1832-09-30
Cloudy with sleet and occasional rain throughout the day. I passed my time in writing, dressing, and pasting labels before Service. Heard Mr. C. Brooks of Hingham preach. His two Sermons were upon a single subject, the primitive Christians, in whose character he recommended the features of unity, peace, love, and charity. The idea is a very good one and much more might be made of it. He dined with us and made himself quite agreeable. He seems a good hearted, kind, and withal tolerably well informed man.
Afternoon, engaged upon the old files of letters, a considerable portion of which I dispatched for the season, in their new form. It would seem as if there was a fate upon these Papers. The procrastination of my father upon this point is very extraordinary. Evening at home. P. Greenleaf came in and passed an hour.
