I was consequently glad when at three o’clock in the morning of the 19th I was directed to get up to accompany my father to Washington. He had just arrived and looked as well as I ever had seen him. We travelled very rapidly and arrived in time to hear Mr. Wirt deliver his Eulogy of Jefferson and my Grandfather.2 It was very good but not altogether what I expected. But I am of opinion that the facts of the case in their death, are above description and that their lives require a volume. I was consequently very anxious to reach home and obtain something to eat as I had tasted nothing during the day.

Morning at home, weather bad, unwell and in low spirits, evening, walk, drenched in the rain.

On Saturday, my Mother arrived dispirited and unwell. My representations had been slighted but the consequences which they foretold had come to pass. I felt melancholy upon the subject, and indeed, now when I recur to the question of family, a creeping dread comes over me and I see distinctly as I think, that the word has lost it’s force to me already in this life. I feel that I am to be an insulated being and that all the social affections which have been so foolishly drawn out for the last three years are to wither soon and forever. But this is all useless complaint, it may not be so, and the prediction of evil is nonsensical trifling.
