Diary of Charles Francis Adams, volume 2
1827-02-14
At home during the day. My spirits have been very bad during the past week. I employed myself industriously however to make up for negligence hitherto. In the evening there was a Drawing Room which was the last. I did not spend a very agreeable one, as I was compelled to be upon my guard, remembering the promise which I had made to Mr. E. and so well kept, not to distinguish Miss B. particularly. There were a great many people here and the generality of them strangers. I am not enough of a republican in my sentiments to relish these parties.
