Diary of Charles Francis Adams, volume 8
1839-07-01
To town. Afternoon at home. Evening at Mrs. T. B. Adams’.
I went to town today instead of tomorrow which was the day for the usual dinner at Squantum. My father went with me.
I strolled into the bookstore of Little & Brown and casually looking into the new number of the North American Review found my Article in full. This is handsome in Dr. Palfrey to say the least of it. The piece is much longer than I had expected and perhaps than it ought to be. But I felt more gratified at it’s being there than at any of my preceding publications without my knowing exactly why, for upon looking over it I felt humble enough at the imperfections of the work which are glaring enough.1
Occupied at the Office in my Quarterly Accounts with my father. Return to dine. Afternoon, some exercise out of doors and two or three visitors. A visit to Mrs. T. B. Adams’ where were all the family. Miss Cutts goes tomorrow to the Eastward.
For CFA’s feelings on sending the article to Palfrey see above, entry for 10 May.
