Cold easterly drizzle. At home all day. Evening at the Mansion.

The weather has been during our stay thus far disagreeable. Clouds and cold and damp have predominated so far as to induce me to regret my removal. I think I will not attempt it hereafter before this date.

I devoted much of my day to writing upon Tucker the first sketch of which I this morning completed. My effort will now be to fill it out, which I hope to set about in earnest next week. Read a part of Mr. Locke’s answer to Lowndes proposition to lower the amount of silver in English coin or to raise the value of money.1

Afternoon, Lessing, Nathan the wise, the plot of which I do not yet comprehend and finished the fourth book of the Pharsalia. I spent some time out working, digging round some of my trees which might, I feared, be checked by the coldness of the ground. There has not been much rain but the east wind and clouds affect the temperature of the earth which on this hill is not very high at this season. Evening at the Mansion.

“Observations on a Paper entitled ‘For Encouraging the Coining of Silver Money in England’” was John Locke’s reply in 1695 to the proposal of the secretary of the treasury, William Lowndes (Works, 10 vols., London, 1823, vol. 5; DNB ).
