Diary of Charles Francis Adams, volume 8
1838-08-01
Quite cool. I nevertheless accompanied my father to the bath which was pleasant. Morning passed for the greater part at home in reading Mr. Felt’s Lecture which after all contains very little that I did not know before, and in making up a sketch of my last and most difficult number of my review. I did not succeed in this to my satisfaction.
Dined with all my family at my fathers but was obliged to devote a great deal of my time both morning and afternoon to overseeing some men who are putting another coat of gravel upon my roads. Read a little of Pliny but on the whole I passed a pretty unsatisfactory day. Evening, Tea and two hours at the Mansion in general conversation.
