Diary of Charles Francis Adams, volume 6
1835-06-24
Morning hazy and warm but an East wind afterwards came up that kept the heat down. I was occupied upon my Article No. 3 which I finished before dinner, but find enough material for another number before I proceed to the authority. It is matter of wonder to me that Mr. Webster should ever have made such a Speech. And it will be matter of wonder how he will be able to sustain it. The Newspapers friendly to him are all mum this morning as if no such Article had 165been written. I wonder if they will stand No. 4. I put that as the limit of his patience and shall dose it according to the effect which the preceding ones produce.
Office. Diary, then to call upon Mr. Brooks who sent me to see Durand. I made an Appointment with him to go to Medford this Afternoon. Accordingly after dinner, we started from my house and arrived there about five. Found Mrs. Everett, Mrs. Frothingham and their children with Miss Lydia Phillips. On the whole pleasant time. Mrs. Everett is recovering from her illness and looks tolerably but she appears to me to have the seeds of disease deeply settled in her. Perhaps this is fancy. We took tea and returned home by eight o’clock.
