Diary of Charles Francis Adams, volume 6
1835-06-01
A heavy rain in the morning but it afterwards cleared and became a very beautiful day. It was Artillery Election day and the Common was alive with faces. My Wife was better but weak. I went to the Office where I did not stay long being engaged in a variety of commissions for my Mother.
Called to see Kirk and had a settlement with him. I stated to him with tolerable exactness the condition he had brought himself to and then stated to him what I had done. I had seen Crosby his Landlord and stated to him the case and we had agreed to put a stop to the tenancy as soon as possible. He was submissive enough but will do nothing.
Home. Mr. Durand called upon me on my return home and prevented my hour for Juvenal which together with that for Pope go sadly begging. He is just from New York on a plan of painting Pictures for his Patron. I offered my services which are not worth much.
Afternoon, Thiers, pretty steadily but I was fatigued and my attention, distracted by the noise of the day. An attempt was made by a gold beater here to ascend in a balloon, which after long delay resulted in despatching the balloon without the man. Madame du Deffand.
I sat down about sunset and wrote a new draught of my Article No. 7. which suits me better than the others, but still defective. This took me the whole evening with the exception of a little German.
