The weather keeps cloudy but does not positively rain or snow. I read Mackintosh and attended Divine Service. Mr. Robbins.1 Job 37. 21. “And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth and cleanseth them.” A dull Sermon upon the moral government of the Universe as a means of reliance and cheerfulness. Some thought the reference to the fashion of suicide now prevalent pretty close upon the family for whose consolation the Discourse was intended, the Richardsons. Mr. Frothingham, Proverbs 28. 1. “The wicked flee when no man pursueth but the righteous are bold as a Lion.” Moral courage necessary to man, with an examination of the Ancient Stoical doctrine which denied the existence of pain. Sermon of Atterbury upon the Anniversary of Queen’s Anne’s accession. 1. Timothy. 1st, 2d and 3d. “I exhort, that 1st of all supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men; for kings and all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty: for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God and our Saviour.” Division follows the text, 1. duty of supplication &ca., 2d. reasons, that we may lead a quiet life, 3d. motive, that it is acceptable in the sight of God. Evening quietly at home. Mr. Blake passed a couple of hours with us.
