Friday. 9th.1

A dinner to the Court of the United States. Judges and Lawyers talking together. I sat next to Mr. Hoffman.2 John’s classmate Dunbar3 was one of the company. How different his tone is from what it was at Cambridge. In the evening, I went to Gen. Brown’s. The party was dreadfully crowded, and I was extremely dull, for my ladies were not there. And all the rest was barrenness. Returned home late and tired to death.
