CFA confided to his mother that he felt a kinship to the character of Disraeli’s hero, but LCA retorted that he should work to destroy any similarity to “the cold, calculating, selfish, vain atom Vivian Gray,” reminding her son that “A man entirely without sentiment, becomes a fiend” (LCA to CFA, 9 Sept. 1826, Adams Papers).
