The Crawford, Calhoun, and Jackson partisans in Congress combined in an attempt to embarrass the Executive by “debating a Resolution to call upon the President for the Correspondence, relating to the Panama Mission, and the Objects in which it is expected our Ministers are to take part. They finally passed the Resolution by a vote of 124 to 40 as modified by Mr. Webster” (JQA, Diary, 3 Feb. 1826).
