JA kept a list of orders drawn on the Paris banking firm of Van den Yver Frères for personal and family expenses from Sept. 1784 through May 1785. He drew the first order that appears there for 4,800 livres tournois on 10 Sept. 1784 (JA, D&A , 3:171–172). Here and elsewhere, where the consortium used the pound sign to indicate livres tournois, the editors have followed it with the livre tournois symbol (₶) in brackets.
