From Edward Hill
Sir ante 19 July 1774

This may serve to apologize for so ungenteel a piece of Conduct as the carrying away a Sum of Money (£ 13.8—lawful) which I have received in your behalf. Nothing but absolute necessity could have forced me to do it but as I am leaving my friend you will not wonder that I wanted money which could not otherwise be procured. I have stated the matter in a letter I left for my father.

I am with much respect, your most Obed Servt., EDW. Hill1

RC (Adams Papers); addressed: “To John Adams Esqr”; endorsed at the foot of the letter in John Trumbull's hand: “July 19 1774. This Letter was found in Mr. Adams' Office. Pr John Trumbull”; endorsed on verso in JA's hand: “July, 1774.”

1.

Hill was one of JA's law clerks, 1772–1775. For biographical sketch, see JA, Legal Papers , 1:ci. For John Trumbull, see same, 1:cxii. This incident seems not to have had any lasting effect upon the relationship between JA and Hill. See entries for 29 July and 8 Aug. 1774, below.
