About the Order of the Medjidie
The Order of the Medjidie was instituted in 1851 by Sultan Abd-ul-Medjid, of the Ottoman Empire, as an award to British and French troops who fought as his allies in the Crimean War. Conferred in recognition of Jackson’s part in the "discovery of Etherization and for the great service it rendered in the War of the Crimea."
