    This pamphlet of spelling lessons, published in the 1860s by the American Tract Society, was meant for children emancipated from enslavement. 

    The front inside cover includes a handwritten inscription which reads: "The first book published for 'Contrabands' at Port Royal." [Note about the term "contraband": in 1861 Union General Benjamin Butler decreed that enslaved people in Southern states who made it to Union lines were to be declared “contraband of war” and not returned to their enslavers.]
