Charles Bush, just beginning his long career as a political cartoonist, satirizes Sorosis, Jane Cunningham Croly’s organization of professional women. Joan of Arc gazes down on a meeting of stereotypically earnest, but severe—frowning and often bespectacled—women. A forlorn man, reduced to domestic chores, feeds a child in the margins of the picture.
