In 1872 the Republican Party split over the reelection of President Grant. Republican reformers supported newspaper editor Horace Greeley, who also secured the nomination of the Democratic Party. Thomas Nast, a strong supporter of the president, mercilessly attacked Greeley as a tool of Tammany Hall and resurgent Southern white supremacy. Here he shows Greeley, known as the “White Coat Statesman,” using his trademark white coat and hat to cover the “monument of infamy” built on a platform of slavery and the “Ku-Klux.”
