This crystal locket contains a fragment of the Hessian flag surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, in 1782.
About 30,000 German soldiers, a quarter of the troops sent to America, fought for the British during the Revolutionary War. Almost half of these soldiers came from the state of Hesse and were referred to as "Hessians".They fought under their German flags, were commanded by their own officers and wore German uniforms.
