This portrait of Elizabeth Temple (1750-1809) was painted by Jane Stuart (1812-1888), after the 1806 original by her father Gilbert Stuart.

Elizabeth Bowdoin was born in Boston in 1750, the daughter of Gov. James Bowdoin and Elizabeth (Erving) Bowdoin. She married Sir John Temple in 1767 and had 5 children. From a wealthy and influential family, she brought a dowry of £1000 to her marriage and eventually inherited a third of her father's estate. She lived in New York after 1785 and died in Boston in 1809.
