This portrait of Jonathan Jackson, a member of the Constitutional Convention and the Continental Congress, was completed by John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) about 1768.
Jonathan Jackson was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1743. He graduated from Harvard College in 1761 and married twice, to Sarah Barnard in 1767 and later to Hannah Tracy, the daughter of Hannah (Gookin) and Patrick Tracy in 1772. He engaged in commerce in Newburyport and privateering during the Revolution. A member of the Constitutional Convention in 1779 and the Continental Congress, Jackson was also a marshal of the Federal Court and treasurer of Massachusetts and Harvard. He was the first president of the Boston Bank. Jonathan Jackson died in Boston in 1810.
