This portrait of Catherine Nuth Johnson, wife of Joshua Johnson and mother of first lady Louisa Catherine Adams, was completed in London, England, by Edward Savage in 1796.

Catherine Nuth Johnson was probably born in London, England about 1757. She married the merchant Joshua Johnson, and bore eight children including Louisa Catherine, who married John Quincy Adams in 1797, and the patriotically named Carolina Virginia Marylanda. Catherine was an ambitious woman, aggressive hostess, and a merchant in her own right. Catherine Johnson died in Washington, D.C., in 1811.
