This portrait of Elizabeth Oliver, daughter of Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Andrew Oliver and Mary Sanford, was completed by John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) around 1758.

Elizabeth Oliver was born in 1739 to Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Andrew Oliver and his second wife, Mary Sanford. She married Edward Lyde, a Boston merchant, in 1772. A loyalist couple, they removed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and then to England during the Revolution. Elizabeth Oliver died in New York City in 1820.
