Senator Leverett Saltonstall heard through a friend, Ralph Bradley, that Philip Hofer, during a visit to Ireland in 1963, had been asked by a local man about the health of "That old Senator Saltonstall—him, that is uncle to Pres. Kennedy." Saltonstall sent the story on to the president, who replied, "we are informed that there are some in Ireland who think you are my uncle. If you are ready to admit it, I am."
