This iron yoke collar was worn by a young enslaved woman in New Orleans who had escaped from her enslaver, Madame Coutrell. After the Federal occupation of New Orleans, Capt. S. Tyler Reed of the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry had the yoke removed from the girl's neck. James Kendall Ewer wrote about this incident in his 1903 history of the regiment.
