July 1 1776

In the fore Noon Spent Some time
very agreeably with Some young Ladies
of my acquaintance in the City.

In the Afternoon took the Alarm Post
assigned for our Regt about 2 Miles
up the River from our Incampment--

2d [July 1776] Part of the Fleet came up to the Watering
Place on Staten Island, in plain Sight
of the City, this Caused the Signals for
an Alarm, the Inhabitants are in great
Confusion removing from the City, &c
Orders were Issued that no Man Either
Officer or Soldier Should be absent from
Camp without leave in Wrighting from
the Commander of the Regiment--

3d [July 1776] More of the Ships are daily coming
up, Some of the Enemy landed on
Long Island Yesterday but were repu-
-lsed

4 [July 1776] Went to the City in the forenoon
The Melitia from all Parts are dai=
-ly coming in many have arived
This Morning our Brigade had
liberty to fire each Man two Rounds
of Cartridge at a m ark, we a ccording=
-ly turned out and marched to a Suit=
-able Place. The first Fire was made
Singly in which one     of Capt
Hamblens Company in our Regt
