12 June 1776.
N York
Two Tories whom they were in pursuit
of but braught them to us & desired
us to keep them, which we did out
out of compassion to the poor Men,
but as no Crime was alledged
Sent in against them we dismissed
them at relieving of the Guard, they
were unwilling to quit the Guard House
which they thaught a Safe Asylum &
we left them but not as Prisoners--
13 [June 1776] I wrote to
my Mother in answer
to her late Letter & sent it by D.
Rider
Wm Stone who
was bound immediately
home, I wrote also to Capt Downs but
did not Send the Letter as I Should
have a more Favourable opportunity
in a few Days to Send to
Nantucket.
A hand Bill appeared containing
a Letter from the Congress to the
Convention of
N York desiring
them
to call in their Melitia as the Con-
-gress had had certain inteligence
that Ld Howe
intended to make an
attack very Soon on
N York within
10 Days at furtherest-- we
are tolerably fortified unless they
land at they get past the Forts and
land above us -- We have daily bad
News from
Quebeck, & there has
been great
Misconduct from what I can learn--
