ALTHOUGH the following specimens may shew our
Author's stile and manner, yet they give a very in-
competent idea of the Composition, nor indeed was this
any part of our intention ; for the Extracts are but few,
and principally taken from the Introduction, which is
only a concise and cursory outline of the whole : A few
verses from the disclosure of which, we find the fol-
lowing contrast to the comparison, which seems to be
one principal drift of the foregoing Performance, and
throughout which the military force of Great-Britain is
represented as comparatively weak and contemptible to
the power of the Colonies, so that in point of strength
he would seem to infer that they are superior to the
Parent State, and of course, that their own option is
the rule of their dependence. But when he speaks in
earnest, he thus represents the power of the Parent-
State
, and the extent of her conquests.
