23. [August 1775] As Master Leach's Son was bringing his
father's breakfast the provost Saw him and
Said to the Soldiers on guard, God damn
that dog, don't let him go up the yard,
that dog deserves to be shot. In the after-
noon Serjeant Neil and Corporal Royal, were
confin'd prisoners by the provost for giving
us air, and fresh water in his absence. They
told him we were almost Suffocated with
heat; he replied, God damn them, let them
die, you have no discretion to let them out.

24. [August 1775] The weather exceeding hot; close confin'd all
day.

25. [August 1775] Last night Thos. Forakers, boat builder and his
Servant John Bowe were brought to goal on
Suspicion of concealing a man that Swam
over from Chelsea, upon the false information
of a very wicked woman, and this morning
the boy John Bowe (about 16 years of age) was
put in the dungeon and in irons, as he had
nothing to confess. He was examined by Major
Sheriff and Major Rooke, and then hand-cuff'd
and put in the dungeon again. We fed the
