Dear Leverett:

I have just arrived in Denver, and I want immediately
to let you know how very much I appreciate your
dedicated cooperation and tireless effort during these
many diffficult months as the Eighty-third Congress
has written its splendid legislative record. Your
leadership in your multitude of responsible positions
in the Senate -- as majority whip, as Chairman of the
Armed Services Committee, as senior member of the
Appropriations Committee -- has provided fresh
evidence of your extraordinary abilities in public
service. I know that your colleagues in the Senate
will agree with me that your many contributions to
our country in this Congress have been remarkable.

This will be, I realize, an exceptionally busy fall
season for you, as it will be for most of us, but I do
hope that you will be able to take at least a part of the
rest you so richly deserve. You know that I most
earnestly wish you success on November second, and
I look forward to the renewal of our close association
in Washington when the Eighty-fourth Congress convenes.
