Dear Mr. Saltonstall,

Having
been out at my
ranch I have but
just received your letter.
I am delighted that
you like the portraits;
I am confident they

are those of Sir Richard
and his wife.

I am greatly obliged
to you for the way
you are going to speak
of the pictures to Lord
North; it is exactly right.
I enclose a letter
of introduction, so to
speak.

But I am fearfully
at sea about titles. I

have never happened to write to h any
"lords", unless I knew them well enough
to write "Dear Lord so-and-so" or simply
"Dear so-and-so"; and I don't even know
Lord North's exact title. If you will wait a
fortnight or so Sir Julian Pauncefote
with whom I am on excellent terms, will
be back here, and I'll get him to give me exact information. Will this do?

Give my love to Mrs. Saltonstall;
and to the rest of the family too.

Faithfully yours
Theodore Roosevelt

[Postscript]

P.S
Victory! I have just met young Chamberlain, the M.P.
He says the way you ought to write is:--
"The Lord North
[Extra punctuation marks]
My Lord:"
so now we're all right!
