About the Order of Saints Maurice & Lazarus

Order of Saints Maurice & Lazarus is a chivalric order formed of two eponymous orders in 1572, when Pope Gregory XIII merged them and charged the new order to defend the Holy See and care for lepers. Awarded by the House of Savoy (formerly Kings of Italy), upon Italy’s unification became the state award for civilian and military merit. It was replaced in 1946 by the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
