In 1871, at the culmination of Thomas Nast’s crusade against political corruption in New York City, he drew “Boss” Tweed leaning on a ballot box, which sits on a stand that bears the inscription: “In counting there is strength.” Nast’s caricatures of William Marcy Tweed, who operated the Democratic Party political machine from behind the scenes, depict a familiar figure—at once sinister and ridiculous.
