    Jefferson found in Abigail Adams a kindred spirit who shared his interest in art, music, and shopping. He wrote to her from Paris about sundry topics, including some shoes he arranged to have shipped to her:

    The shoes your ordered, will be ready this day and will accompany the present letter. but why send money for them? you know the balance of trade was always against me.
