Private Rupert J. Sadler, a young Irish mechanic from Boston whom Wilder Dwight (a lawyer before the war) had successfully represented in a manslaughter case, crept out to his commander who lay wounded between the battle lines and stayed by his side until it was safe enough to move him. Sadler was killed in action the following year at Gettysburg, carrying the 2nd Regiment's colors.
