In 1653, Oliver Cromwell ordered Capt. John Leverett and Major Robert Sedgwick to sail from England to New England to present letters to the governors of the colonies in an attempt to put together an army to invade New York and take it from the Dutch. In these military instructions, Cromwell provides details about what the two men should do with the conquered forts and their inhabitants.
