In this note written by Elizabeth Coombs Adams (1803-1903), which accompanies the pocket, the item is described as a "Dimity pocket worn for 50 years (probably) by Mrs. Abigail Adams my Grand Mother & wife of John Adams. All old ladies wore these under pockets & carried their keys in them." Given the good condition of the pocket, it is highly unlikely that Abigail used this pocket for "fifty years," however.
