The first issue of The Liberator, dated 1 January 1831, contains an editorial by its founder William Lloyd Garrison. Garrison, known in Boston as an incendiary public speaker in the antislavery cause, responded to his critics: "It is pretended, that I am retarding the cause of emancipation by the coarseness of my invective, and the precipitancy of my measures. The charge is not true."
